Random team generator
This free team generator splits 2–40 players into two teams for your next football or futsal game, without an account. Start with a random draw, then optionally add skill ratings in the player editor and generate balanced teams, swap players or copy the lineups.
How to pick your teams
- Paste one name per line and draw your first two teams. Add a nickname or initial when two people share a name.
- The player editor appears after the first draw. Adjust the list if needed, or choose balancing and enter optional whole-number ratings from 0 to 5. Generate again after making changes.
- Swap a player from each team if needed, then copy the lineups to your group chat. You can generate again, but you may get the same split.
Random draw or balance by ratings?
A random draw shuffles the list in your browser and splits it into two teams, ignoring ratings. Use it when you want a draw rather than a comparison of skill.
Balancing finds the smallest possible difference between the teams' total ratings, with team sizes differing by no more than one. After your first draw, choose balancing, add optional whole-number ratings from 0 to 5 in the player editor and generate again. Zero is a rating, not a missing value.
An unrated player gets the median of the known ratings for this calculation. Sort the known ratings and take the middle value, or the average of the two middle values. If nobody is rated, everyone gets 2.5, so there is no skill information to balance.
Read the guide to making fair teams, including goalkeepers and positions.
What the generator can and cannot do
Enter 2–40 players for exactly two teams. With an odd number, one team has an extra player, for example 5 against 6. Each player appears once. Names can have up to 60 characters, with 10,000 characters across the list. Blank lines do not add players.
The smallest rating difference does not guarantee a fair match. Ratings are subjective, and the generator has no inputs for positions, fitness or how well players work together. Check goalkeepers and other needs yourself, and swap players if necessary. A manual swap may no longer be the best split by ratings.
Worked example with fictional players
This fixed example explains the method. It is not your result and does not use the names you enter. Comet has 5, Lynx 4, Echo 3, Moss 2 and Nova has no rating.
The known ratings are 2, 3, 4 and 5. Nova gets their median: (3 + 4) / 2 = 3.5. Five players make teams of two and three.
Example team A
- Comet: 5
- Nova: 3.5
Total: 5 + 3.5 = 8.5
Example team B
- Echo: 3
- Moss: 2
- Lynx: 4
Total: 3 + 2 + 4 = 9
The difference is 9 − 8.5 = 0.5. The combined total is 17.5. With these half-point ratings, the difference cannot be zero, and this split reaches the minimum of 0.5.
Questions about the team generator
Do I need an account?
No. Generate teams, balance ratings, swap players and copy the result without signing in. An account for the SpinMyTeam app is optional.
Is the generator free?
Yes. Random draws, rating-based balancing, swaps and copying are free, with no daily draw limit or required email address. This applies to this tool, not a promise about all app features.
How do I split an odd number of players?
One team gets one extra player, so 11 people become teams of 5 and 6. Paste the names and draw as usual. The generator does not leave anyone out.
How do ratings work?
Ratings are optional whole numbers from 0 to 5. After the first draw, choose balancing, enter ratings in the player editor and generate again. Missing ratings use the median of the known ratings, or 2.5 if all are missing. Zero counts as a known rating. The generator minimizes the difference in total ratings, not the difference in average ratings or actual chances of winning.
Can I change the teams?
Yes. Select one player from each team and swap them, using the keyboard if you prefer. The result is marked as manually changed and the rating difference is recalculated. Editing names, ratings or mode makes the old result out of date. Generate again before copying.
What happens to the names I enter?
Ordinary use keeps names, ratings and teams in this tab's memory. They are never sent to the server or placed in URLs. Choosing to create a group saves a draft in this browser for 24 hours, so you can return after signing up. It does not sync across devices or add players to a group or match. The draft is tied to your verified account on return. Clear and logout remove it. Without that opt-in, leaving or reloading loses the result. Copying includes team headings and names, not ratings.
